| Robert D. Hertz Artist Robert D. Hertz was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1948. At an early age he wanted to be an artist. His earliest childhood memories were of sketching, drawing, doodling. As a child, he was chosen to study art at the Carnegie Institute as a member of the Tam O’Shanters. His family, however, saw neither practicality nor value in art. He was never encouraged to pursue his passion and would have to suppress his delight for the beautiful and move in a more conventional direction. Therefore, he entered the world of computers, graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Computer Science and worked successfully for twenty five years in the corporate computer world. Eighteen years ago on a trip through Central Italy, he rediscovered art and found that the passion to create still burned within himself. This event solidified his decision to change his life, to pursue his life’s goal. He returned to sketching, studying the masters and painting. Primarily self-educated through a study of the masters, he has also studied at the Carnegie and briefly with Frank Mason. Robert is a painter who works with oils, watercolor, and pastels to create, primarily, city and landscapes. Art has become the vehicle through which he can express those aspects of himself which were deeply repressed and held hidden from the world. He is chiefly self taught and spent the first ten years of his career immersing himself in the techniques of the masters. His early original work was influenced by the Impressionists and dealt with the handling of light and of color. As his art developed, however, he became more Expressionistic—that is, no longer focusing on the elements of painting, such as color or perspective but rather he became free and capable of releasing an inner expression of his vision of the motif. He has an instinctive desire and ability to create and he has spent decades honing his craft. There are few days in which he does not paint. Art has been his joy since childhood and is the drive that continues to sustain and give purpose to his existence. His paintings are included in private collections and shows. The collections include those of: Mr. and Mrs. Frederic Bucci Ms. Mavis Armbruster Mr. Mark Bulgar Mr. and Mrs. John Plotts Mr. and Mrs. Italo V. Mackin Mrs. Catharine M. Ryan Mr. and Mrs. Chris M.
